Virtual server

Summary

A software-based server that runs on a physical machine.

Description

Allows organisations to run multiple workloads on fewer physical servers, saving costs and improving resilience.

The best setups use proper resource allocation, ongoing monitoring, and strong backup policies. When implementing a virtual server, remember that this is now a new layer of software, and so comes with its own secuirty risks that you will have to mitigate, especially as it interracts with your other resources.

Your virtual server will only ever be as effective as the hardware it interacts with; failure of the physical hardware will impact your virtual servers, too.
